St. Augustine residents may get higher tax bills

St. Augustine residents and business owners may see a bump in their property taxes if the City Commission keeps the tentative tax rate approved Monday night.

The City Commission approved a tax rate equal to the rate it approved last year during a meeting Monday night. Thanks to rising property values, that means St. Augustine would draw in $2.5 million more than it did last year.

The proposed tax rate of 7.5 mills is 8% higher than the rate needed to keep property tax reveue at the current level: 6.93 mills.

Residents are encouraged to come to the city’s public budget meeting, when elected officials will talk in depth about what property taxes and other revenue will fund for the city. The first meeting will be at 5 p.m. Sept. 5 in the Alcazar Room, 75 King St.

The meeting will also be broadcast live on the city’s website .
