Early voting starts soon on the First Coast

The start of the early voting period for the Aug. 20 primary election is right around the corner.

Early voting in Putnam County is the first to begin Monday. Early voting was suppose to begin Monday in Duval County, but it was delayed to Wednesday because of Tropical Storm Debby. Nassau County’s early voting period starts Wednesday as well. That’s followed Thursday by Clay and Baker counties and finally St. Johns County on Aug. 10.

Registered voters can vote at any early voting site during the early voting period. Before you cast your ballot, you can compare candidates for each race in the Jacksonville Today Voter Guides .

In Duval County, there are 24 early voting sites to choose from, an increase from 19 in years past.

Duval Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland said this might be the first time some voters will use one of the five new early voting sites since the Presidential Preference Primary in March was closed to registered Republicans.

“A lot of times we’ll hear constantly, yes, it is a closed primary state; yes, the two major parties have primary races. But there are races on the ballot for those who are minor parties or no party affiliation. So don’t think that this election there’s nothing for you to vote [on]. Every race is important,” Holland said.

Holland mentions judges’ races and school board races — which are nonpartisan — as contests that minor party and no party affiliation voters can cast a ballot for.

One of the new early voting locations is at Edward Waters University in the New Town neighborhood of Jacksonville. The return of an early voting location has drawn high praise from community organizations like the Northside Coalition and the Jacksonville NAACP, which say that it’s a win for Black and young voters alike. The other new sites are at the Southside Community Center, the Police Athletic League on Monument Road, the University of Florida Extension Center on McDuff Avenue, and the Maxville Library.

The increase in the number of early voting sites is due to a lawsuit settlement against the supervisor of elections office, which ultimately resulted in the number of precincts dropping from 186 to 160.

Holland said increasing the number of early voting sites should open up access to more voters before Election Day and help to ease any potential long lines precincts might face.

If you plan to vote early, you will need to bring an acceptable form of identification like a driver’s license or a passport when you go to vote, elections officials said.

If you have a vote-by-mail ballot, that will need to be returned to your supervisor of elections office no later than 7 p.m. on Election Day.

Below are lists of early voting locations and times for each county in Northeast Florida.

Baker County

Early voting in Baker County is from Aug. 8 until Aug. 17 from 8:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. daily at the Supervisor of Elections Office, 32 N. 5th Street in Macclenny.

Clay County

Early voting in Clay County is from Thursday Aug. 17 from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily.

Early voting begins Wednesday and runs through Aug. 18. Each location will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily.
