One of the most anticipated athletic events for triathletes is in San Francisco occurs in June. Here is the schedule and map for the popular Escape From Alcatraz Fitness Festival and Triathlon.

The Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon Fitness Festival and Expo will occur on June 8th and 9th at the Marina Green in San Francisco. The Marina Green is located in the Marina District along the San Francisco Bay between Fort Mason and the Presidio. The event itself is free to viewers. There will be approximately 15,000 people in attendance so organizers say to get there early and use public transportation. There will be vendor booths with some of the latest equipment and gear as well as a beer garden and food court.

The Triathlon:

The triathlon will happen on Sunday, June 8th. It is a challenging and unique course that starts with a swim from Alcatraz prison which is 1.5 miles long in the chilly San Francisco Bay to the Shoreline of San Francisco. It is followed by an 18-mile bike ride and then finishes off with a tough 8-mile run to the finish line. The bike ride goes through Golden Gate Park and the run goes through a trail at Baker Beach and up the grueling Sand Ladder. The 2,000 participants who brave this course are mostly experienced athletes. The registrants put their names in as participants and they are chosen weeks before the race. Some years even the waiting list fills up and they stop taking people's requests to enter.
