August 16 is National Rum day and in San Francisco, rum remains a very popular alcohol for summer and winter drinks. And in history it plays a large role in several cultures.

Most historians have rum being invented around the 17th century. Some think it actually was created in Asia but that it was refined in the Caribbean. They learned that in the warmth it would create an alcoholic beverage when the molasses fermented.

    The Bay Area & Rum:

Many historians feel that the famous rum drink the Mai Tai was created in Oakland by Victor Bergeron AKA Trader Vic in Oakland in 1944 at his restaurant. The original recipe used17-year-old Jamaican rum, fresh lime, orange curaçao, Rock candy sugar, and French orgeat syrup.Legend has it that the drink was so popular that rum reserves were being depleted.

The Best Mai Tai's In the Bay Area:

    Smugglers Cove: San Francisco: (https://www.smugglerscovesf.com/)

With countless types of rum, this is the place for any tiki bar and rum fanatic. Their customers share great reviews and they have a lot of regulars. Their Mai Tai is a crowd pleaser along with the atmosphere and the other drinks that are available. Their Mai Tai's have rum, fresh lime, house-made orgeat, orange curaçao, demerara sugar much like Trader Vic's Original.

    Trader Vic's: Emeryville: (https://tradervicsemeryville.com/about/)

Trader Vic's invented teh mai tai and this is an institution in the bay area. They are celebrating their 90th anniversary and that says something. They moved from Oakland to Emeryville in 1972. The original Mai Tai drink is still available along with 7 other recipes. When you enter it's like going into a tiki bar time warp. They have lots of food available including a kids menu, but it's the original Mai Tai's that are the main attraction. They also have mai tai samplers as well.

    Zombie Village: San Francisco: (https://www.thezombievillage.com/)

Many feel the bay area is the tiki bar capital and it's hard to deny it when you walk into Zombie Village. It is more modernized than Trader Vic's and it is pure tiki bar down to the last detail. Most customers rave about the décor and lighting that is an eye catcher.

They have rum and spirit tastings and of course the classic Mai Tai. The only drawback is that they don't serve food but it doesn't stop people from making sure they venture into this tiki bar spot.
