Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed ban on smartphone use in California schools would do more harm than good
A statewide ban on smartphone use in schools would run into the same enforcement problems as local restrictions – while also taking agency away from the school community. At Rocklin High School, uneven enforcement already hinders school administrators’ efforts to keep phones out of the classroom. The phone pocket policy, for example, is applied differently from teacher to teacher, creating friction between staff and frustration among students. Newsom’s proposal does not specify whether students would be allowed to keep their phones with them during the school day. If they are, this will continue to be an issue regardless of whether the rule comes from the principal or from the governor.

Here's why Gov. Newsom is urging Oakland to update strict police pursuit policy
Governor Gavin Newsom is urging Oakland city leaders to revise the city's police pursuit policy.He sent a letter to Mayor Sheng Thao, the City Council, and the police department.MORE: Gov. Evacuations ordered in Lake Elsinore as fire scorches more than 134 acres
Evacuation orders have been issued in Lake Elsinore as a fire spread to more than 134 acres Thursday evening.The Macy Fire was first reported around 5:40 p.m. in the area of Macy Street and Orange Street in the El Cariso neighborhood of unincorporated Lake Elsinore. It was spreading rapidly after a day in which temperatures hit the triple digits in the Inland Empire.Footage from the scene showed the flames tearing through brush on hillsides overlooking residential neighborhoods.
