Teachers, District Pursue Legal Arbitration
The two sides in a legal dispute within Newport Public Schools are pursuing expedited arbitration to resolve the conflict. The matter came to Newport County Superior Court earlier this month after the Teachers’ Association of Newport filed for a temporary restraining order against Supt. Colleen Burns Jermain, as well as alleged grievances and unfair labor practices related to the displacement of 45 educational positions and the layoff of 19 others. TAN named Jermain, NPS, the Newport School Committee and the City of Newport in its June 5 complaint, stating its collective bargaining agreement with the district had been violated and the position transfers should be rescinded.
