JANESVILLE — A medical surgical registered nurse at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital was honored with a DAISY award for providing outstanding care.

Kyleigh Kreager was surprised with the award June 20. According to a release, Kreager was nominated by a patient who said:

“I came to the ER with left leg numbness and severe pain. It was the worst pain I had experienced in my life. I was upset and scared the whole time, waiting to hear from neurosurgery. I was admitted to the hospital. My nurse for the first night was Kyleigh. She was probably the sweetest and most attentive nurse I’ve ever dealt with. She listened to my worries and just her compassion and empathy were so strong that my fears would dissipate when she was in the room. She was always on time with medications, so we stayed in front of my pain. She never left me worried about anything, and if I had a question, she got it answered for me. She should be the standard all nurses hold themselves to for the best patient care.”

The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, a young man who died from an autoimmune disease. The ward recognizes and thanks nurses for their work and compassion.
