School District of Janesville to add two new referendum questions to Nov. ballot

JANESVILLE, Wis. -- The School District of Janesville announced Tuesday two additional referendum questions will be added to the ballot for November, after considering community survey feedback.
The SDJ said the first question will ask voters to consider a referendum the community approved in 2020, which enabled the district to leverage available funds through an increased revenue limit authority. Taxpayers would not see an increase over the school district's current portion of the mill rate.
If the referendum is renewed, the district said it would use funds to maintain small class sizes at transitional grade levels, continue investments in classroom technology and supporting infrastructure, attract and retain staff, invest in curriculum resources, and avoid drastic reductions.
The SDJ said the second question is a capital referendum question to address the district's prioritized facility needs. If approved, the district would repair or replace high-priority capital maintenance needs, enhance safety and security, and improve special education spaces. The property tax impact would be $81 per every $100,000 of assessed fair market property value.
The SDJ said both referendum questions will be added to address inadequate funding, increasing expenses and inflations, facility needs, and increasing mental health and special education needs. District leaders will seek engagement from the community and taxpayers to learn more about the district's needs and proposed solutions.
