JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. ( WATE ) — The suspect at the center of a standoff situation was taken to a local trauma center due to a self-inflicted gunshot, according to the Jefferson City Police Department as they released new information Wednesday regarding the incident they responded to on Tuesday morning.

According the the JCPD news release, officers and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the domestic situation at 5:36 a.m. July 30 at a home on Morrisett Avenue involving an armed, suicidal man. The victim told officers that the armed man threatened her with a firearm and threatened himself before she fled to a nearby neighbor to call 911.

“Officers and negotiators repeatedly requested the male to exit the residence, but he continually refused,” JCPD’s news release states. “The JCPD special response team (SRT) deployed chemical munitions and continued negotiations with no success.”

Then, at around 10:50 a.m. the SRT “successfully removed the armed male suspect,” JCPD stated, “and discovered that he appeared to be suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.”

The suspect, who was not identified in Wednesday morning’s release, continued to be uncooperative and was taken to a local trauma center for treatment, JCPD said. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was requested to assist.

On Tuesday, law enforcement personnel responded to a standoff at a residence on Morrisett Avenue that began as a domestic call.

The Jefferson City Police Department shared around 10:56 a.m. that the suspect was in custody. JCPD had shared on its social media Tuesday at 9:18 a.m. that it was on the scene of a barricade situation near Morrisett and SR 92.

JCPD Chief Andy Dossett told WATE that the incident began as a domestic call and officers were able to get the girlfriend out of the house. A man was refusing to come out of the home.

“This is an active situation. Please stay clear of the area,” JCPD said.
