Portland author Alissa Hattman has made the shortlist for the nationwide 2024 Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction for her first novel, Sift (The 3rd Thing Press, 120 pages, $24). After an open nomination process last April in which authors and fans alike could nominate fiction novels that represented ideas reflected in Le Guin’s work, Hattman joins nine other authors on the shortlist. This year’s recipient of the prize will be chosen by a panel of authors that includes writers such as The Handmaid’s Tale author Margaret Atwood and The Paper Menagerie author Ken Liu.

Ore Fire estimated at 47 acres; community meeting set for Tuesday evening
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Fire suppression efforts continue on the Ore Fire, which is burning 7 miles northeast of Blue River, Oregon, officials said in an update Tuesday morning. The fire, which was first reported on July 16, is estimated at 747 acres and the cause remains under investigation. There are currently 246 people assigned to the fire.
Eugene woman arrested on drug charges after child tests positive for fentanyl
EUGENE, Ore. -- A four-year-old Eugene child tested positive for Fentanyl in June, leading to an investigation that detailed drug-related crimes dating back three years. A search warrant filed with the Lane County Circuit Court said the child told Eugene Police Department detectives that his mom gives blue pills to people who come and go from the house, and that they usually smoke the pills off of tinfoil in the home. Eugene police confirmed their Street Crimes Unit served the search warrant on July 17 at the child’s home.
