The fireworks visible in the distance on Saturday evening were no match for the fireworks on the track at Jefferson Speedway. Another night of fantastic racing action saw Stephen Scheel of Lake Mills parked in victory lane following the KNR Transport 50 lap Late Model main event. Scheel took control of the top spot before the halfway point and held off the challenge of Seth Reamer to seal his first win of the season.

Kyle Smith and Scott Patrick led the field to green with Smith gaining the early advantage. Reamer filled the gap under Patrick on lap two as they raced for second. Reamer continued to inch forward, creeping up on the low side of Smith. By lap five, Smith and Reamer were side by side fighting for the lead. Reamer completed the pass and immediately began to break away from the pack while Smith and Patrick battled for second. Patrick moved ahead of Smith on lap 11 with Scheel in his tracks for third.

The first of two cautions slowed the field on lap 14 for a multi car melee in tun four. Reamer and Patrick brought the field back to green with Reamer once again moving into the lead. Scheel followed into second just before the second and final yellow flag waved on lap 15. This time, it was Reamer and Scheel on the front row for the restart with Scheel gaining a slight advantage as racing resumed. Scheel drove ahead to claim the top spot on lap 16 as Reamer dropped in line behind.

The two leaders began to separate themselves from the rest of the field while Shaun Scheel made his way up to third. Reamer remained glued to Stephen Scheel’s rear bumper as the laps ticked away and Shaun Scheel tried to close the gap. But Stephen Scheel remained in control, holding off Reamer to see the checkers first and record the win. Reamer finished second with Shaun Scheel coming home third. Penn Sauter and Dylan Schuyler rounded out the top five.

Fort Atkinson’s Matthew Thoma picked up his first career Sportsman feature win at Jefferson Speedway by claiming the 35 lap feature event. Craig Henning and Chris Harmon paced the field to green with Harmon taking the early lead on lap one. Thoma drove to the high side of Henning, clearing for second on lap two and bringing Robert Hansberry Jr along for third.

Thoma sized up Harmon for a couple laps, until making his move on lap five on the low side of the leader. Thoma completed the pass on lap six with Hansberry in tow for second. Tytus Helgestad moved into third on lap ten and the three leaders began to pull away from the pack and separate themselves from each other as well. The to three ran single file for the remainder of the race while the battle for fourth on back raged behind them. Thoma led every lap of the event to claim the win with Hansberry and Helgestad in second and third. Kyle Chwala won the battle for fourth with Chris Jones taking fifth.

Nick Schmidt of Watertown was the winner of the 20 lap Bandit feature event. A three wide battle for the lead on the opening lap ended with Ryan Oetzel claiming the point and Trent Rueth in tow for second. The first of two cautions appeared on lap eight with Oetzel reclaiming the lead on the restart. Rueth and Landon Peterson battled for second behind him until the second yellow flag flew on lap 13.

As a result of the caution, Schmidt moved up to second, restarting alongside Oetzel with 7 laps to go. After a brief battle on the restart, Schmidt cleared for the lead exiting turn four with Oetzel dropping back to battle Tom Schuette for second. Schmidt drove off to grab the win with Schuette nipping Oetzel for second. Matt Krinke and Tyler White completed the top five.

Slinger’s Lincoln Cain completed the sweep of the Legends division after capturing fast time in qualifying, winning his heat race and claiming the 25 lap feature event. Art Hahn led lap one from the outside of row one with Cael Slater up to second. A caution on lap seven pitted Hahn and Slater on the front row for the restart.

As racing resumed, Cain dropped to the low side of the speedway, drawing even with the leaders in a three wide fight for first. Cain and Hahn emerged door to door with Cain eventually taking sole possession of the top spot on lap nine. Dillon Schwanbeck sliced his way up to second on the same lap and drew in behind Cain as they began to pull away from the rest of the field. Schwanbeck continued to fill Cain’s rearview mirror lap after lap as he searched for a way to get by. But Cain kept Schwanbeck at bay to secure the win. Jayden Johnson was third followed by Jacob Stark and Ethan Ross.

Kaeden Wangsness of Jefferson used a late restart to get his brother, Teegan, and capture the 15 lap Bandolero feature race. Teegan drove up between the two front row starters and lap one and fired into the lead with Lincoln Johnson dropping into second and Kaeden Wangsness quickly up to third. Kaeden drove under Johnson on lap five, taking over the second spot and drawing in behind his brother in the lead.

After two back to cautions on laps 10 and 11, Teegan continued to show the way with his brother right behind in second. A final yellow flag in the closing laps set up a green-white-checkered finish with the Wangsness brothers running first and second.

As racing resumed, Kaedan charged under Teegan exiting turn two. The brothers raced side by side under the white flag with Kaedan beginning to gain the advantage. Kaeden completed the winning pass on the final circuit, pumping his fist out the window as he crossed under the checkers for the win. Teegan Wangsness settled for second followed by Harley Johnson, Bentley Thompson and Axel Oldenhoff.

Racing resumes next Saturday, July 13, with the Stock Stub Special racing event. Time trials begin at 4pm with racing at 6pm. Please visit jeffersonspeedway.com for more information.
