JEFFERSON — Jefferson’s summer baseball team split a doubleheader versus Columbus at Fischer Field on Monday, losing the opener 2-1 before a 6-3 win in game two.

The Eagles (6-2) broke a scoreless tie in the home half of the sixth in the first game. Bentley Wagner lined a single to right field to open the inning, took second when Braxton Thiede reached on a misplayed fly ball in right field before Cale Schmidt’s sacrifice bunt put both runners in scoring position.

Gavin Berge grounded out next, with Wagner sprinting back toward third briefly before darting home, narrowly beating the throw from first base.

In the Columbus seventh, Riley Kaminski, who had three hits including a pair of doubles, lined a double to center with one out. Owen Cowell followed with a bloop single.

Cowell then swiped second with Wagner, the team’s shortstop, cutting off the throw to the bag before firing an errant throw to third in an attempt to get Kaminski out. The throw went out of play, allowing both runners to come around.

Jefferson’s Mason Merz, who allowed two unearned runs on seven hits in seven innings, took the loss. He struck out seven and walked two.

In game two, the Eagles scored three times in the first inning, adding two fourth-inning runs to go up 5-1 in what was a five-inning affair.

Jefferson’s Gavin Berge tallied two hits, including a double.

Tanner Bergey earned the decision for the Eagles, allowing an unearned run on one hit with four strikeouts in three innings. Berge fanned three in the final two innings.
