JERSEY CITY, NJ - Almost a decade ago Sherry Singh found out that resources for those on the autism spectrum in Hudson County were not enough to provide assistance to everyone that needed them.

Her son, who is now an adult, has severe autism, giving Singh an inside look into the struggles of a parent whose child had already aged out of the system that is more focused on providing early intervention and service to the younger members of the community.

So, Singh decided to create her own group, Whole Spectrum Autism, which for the past nine years has become a beacon of hope, and support, for families like hers.

Last month the organization, with many of Singh’s family members on hand, as well as dozens of dignitaries and other supporters, held their ninth annual gala, this year at Liberty House in Liberty State Park.

Hundreds filled the reception area and later the diner area to help celebrate the success of Singh’s mission.

The annual fundraiser helps raise money for Whole Spectrum's mission of championing autism acceptance and inclusion by facilitating community engagement and serving as a voice for families whose loved ones are on the spectrum. The funds raised support autism acceptance events, education and advocacy.

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. Because autism is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. Some people with ASD require significant support in their daily lives, while others need less support and some live independently.
