Nashville, Tenn. — The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDOSHS) has introduced new Driver Licenses and ID cards featuring enhanced security measures and a refreshed design. According to a news release by the department, these new credentials, alongside self-service kiosks aimed at reducing wait times at Driver Service Centers, are being rolled out across the state starting today.

The redesigned Driver Licenses and ID cards prominently display a stylized depiction of Tennessee's historic State Capitol and the state flag’s iconic three stars, symbolizing the state's three grand divisions. The updated design includes intricate waves and fine patterns, making replicating the cards more difficult.

Constructed from durable polycarbonate, the new credentials incorporate advanced security and printing technologies. These features include overlapping data and graphics, laser-engraved elements, and a machine-readable barcode with pertinent information such as class, endorsements, and restrictions. Additionally, a ghost image from the photograph is encoded for automated validation, further bolstering protection against identity theft.

"The new Tennessee Driver Licenses incorporate the latest technology, making them more difficult to counterfeit, alter, or duplicate," said TDOSHS Commissioner Jeff Long. "These countermeasures help prevent theft and fraud and ensure your identity remains secure."

Current Driver Licenses and ID cards remain valid until expiration, meaning Tennesseans are not required to obtain the new design until their current license or ID expires or changes are needed, such as for a name or address update.

The new design will apply to all credentials issued by TDOSHS, including Regular Driver Licenses, Teen/Graduate Driver Licenses, Commercial Driver Licenses, Motorcycle Licenses, ID-only licenses, REAL IDs, and Handgun Carry Permits.

In addition to the updated credentials, the department has introduced self-service kiosks across Driver Service Centers, providing a convenient way for citizens to complete various services. The kiosks allow for the renewal or replacement of Driver Licenses or ID cards, address changes, emergency contact updates, advancement of Teen/Graduated Driver Licenses, payment of reinstatement fees, and license reissue after reinstatement requirements are met. The kiosks can take photos and process payments via Apple Pay, Google Pay, or credit/debit cards.

"We are excited about the added flexibility and convenience the new self-service kiosks will provide for Tennesseans," Commissioner Long added. "These kiosks will help reduce wait times at Driver Services Centers."
