JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Johnson City Public Library (JCPL) is hosting its sixth annual comic convention on Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The event is free for community members of all ages, and this year’s theme is titled “LibCon VI: Tome Raiders.”

A release from the library said LibCon is its version of Comic-Con, a pop culture fandom convention. JCPL’s young adult librarian Kip Polmanteer said in the release that putting on a Comic-Con style event is a natural fit for the library.

“LibCon is not just a fandom convention, but a chance to celebrate literacy on a bigger scale,” she said. “Whether you’re a fan of books, graphic novels, manga, anime, movies, art, or cosplay, there is some part of LibCon that is designed for you.”

The library said this year’s theme highlights adventure and action, thus the pun-type joke title “Tome Raiders.” Tomb Raiders is a popular action video game-turned-movie franchise, but the word tome was used for the name instead, which is defined by Oxford Dictionary as “a book, especially a large, heavy, scholarly one.”

“Attendees of all ages will enjoy adventure-themed trivia, activities, karaoke, photo ops, and a scavenger hunt,” the release states. Guests can also partake in a costume contest or just cosplay for enjoyment while exploring vendor booths. Costumes are encouraged by the JCPL.

The JCPL said it wants LibCon to be a place to enjoy “all things nerdy for free.” Families are invited to attend with kids of all ages.

More information on the free comic convention and a full schedule of events can be found at Libcon.jcpl.org. The JCPL is located at 100 W. Millard Street in downtown Johnson City.
