Dog & Puppies Abandoned in Suitcase in North Carolina

On May 15, the Cleveland Fire Department discovered a dog and her puppies abandoned in a zipped-up suitcase in Johnston County, North Carolina. Cleveland Station 2’s personnel found the bag in front of the fire station on Wednesday evening.

On Wednesday, firefighters rescued an adult dog and her puppies stuffed in a suitcase in front of their facility. The bag was abandoned in front of the Cleveland Fire Department, per WRAL News . Moreover, the suitcase was completely zipped up. So, the situation could have proven fatal for the canines if the firefighters hadn’t rescued them on time.

Once the firefighters spotted the mama dog and her pups, they promptly removed them from the suitcase. They then moved them to a safer place. The firefighters also gave them food and water as they were unsure how long the canines had been left there. Dehydration in dogs can quickly take a turn for the worse, so providing them with ample water is vital.

Johnston County Animal Services Director Chad Massengill noted that he could never understand why an individual would resort to this. “All they have to do is come to the shelter and walk in the building, and we’ll take the animals,” he said. While animal abandonment itself is inhumane, stuffing the canines in a zipped-up bag further risked their lives.

The firefighters reached out to the Johnston County Animal Control for help with the animals. The canines are now being treated there, receiving the love and care they deserve. Animal advocate Emily Parker highlighted that animal cruelty is rampant in the United States. She called for stricter laws to be put in place to keep people in check.

Fortunately, the abandoned dog and her puppies are doing well, and several rescue groups are interested in helping the canines find their forever homes. Additionally, investigators are looking into this animal cruelty as well.
