JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A Rhode Island State Police trooper was involved in a crash early Thursday morning in Johnston.

State police say the trooper was driving eastbound on Route 6 around 1 a.m. during a heavy rainstorm when he “encountered a large puddle, causing his vehicle to hydroplane.”

The cruiser left the highway and struck the retention wires in the center median, state police said.

Airbags were seen deployed and the cruiser had heavy front and side damage.

    The trooper suffered minor injuries.
