JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Westmont Hilltop Recreation Commission is creating a business plan to create a multi-million dollar indoor sports complex in Upper Yoder Township.

The commission anticipates a $30 million to $50 million complex that would provide state-of-the-art sports facilities the school district is lacking along Goucher Street, according to our media partners at The Tribune-Democrat. The new complex will also draw sports tourism to the Johnstown area, including traveling pick-up basketball teams.

The commission appointed a committee of commission members during its July 1 meeting and plans to meet with school district representatives on July 24 with a consultant for the project — The Sports Facilities Companies.

The firm was hired earlier this year to determine the economic viability of the project and to form a business plan.

An initial meeting with the Florida-based company was conducted last month via videoconference, commission Chairman Rob Gleason told our media partners at The Tribune-Democrat.

Gleason added that the project would be funded by multiple sources, including tax revenue supplied to the commission from its chartering government agencies, the school district, the borough and Upper Yoder Township. They also plan to apply for grants and generate revenue from programming at the complex and private sponsorships.

The higher, $50 million figure, is the estimated cost of constructing an aquatics center that commission members said is “sorely” needed for the southern Cambria County area.
