JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — Human remains were recently found in a Johnstown apartment and were identified as a man reported missing in December.

Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees confirmed during a Friday morning news conference that the body was identified as 36-year-old Gregory Ira Rohn, who was reported missing in Dec. 2023.

The cause of death is still under investigation.

“A lot of tedious work needs to be done,” Lees said. “It will take several weeks for these tests to be completed.”

Lees added that the body was identified using digital imagery of the skull from Mercyhurst University. The remains are believed to be five or six months old, creating a possible challenge for tests such as toxicology.

Sergeant Adams with the Johnstown police said they have a list of people Rohn was known to hang out with that they want to speak to.

The “welfare check” was originally triggered by someone calling about an odor coming from the apartment, he added.

On June 29, Johnstown police were sent to a home on the 100 block of Adam Street for a welfare check. It was reported that when they arrived they found flies inside a window and noticed a foul smell.

While searching the house, officials said a body was wrapped in a tarp and was “very well hidden” in the crawl space of a third-floor bedroom.

It was reported that police searched the house several times before the body was found. Lees called the death “highly suspicious.”
