JOPLIN, MO – Former NFL wide receiver Rod Smith returned to Joplin to host the ‘Rod Smith Golf Classic’ at Eagle Creek Golf Course on Thursday morning.

The classic would see several Missouri Southern alumni, including some notable names. Former Chiefs defensive tackle Brandon Williams, as well as MSSU head football coach Atiba Bradley would be in attendance.

The tournament seeks to help raise funds for Missouri Southern athletics, as well as student athletes.

“You get to see the coaches, and it’s kind of a kickoff for the upcoming year,” said former Webb City basketball coach Rick Utter.

“It’s all just terrific, and you really have your Missouri Southern family.”

Bradley would mention the importance of athletics also supporting the community.

“It’s import that when we have events, the community comes out and supports us,” said Bradley.

“However, when the community needs us, we need to go out and support them, so today is really a huge day for all of us.”

Rod Smith would discuss the importance of giving back to those that supported him, and how much Southern athletics has grown.

“We’ve been competing really well with other schools the last few years,” said Smith.

“It has been a really good shift. The organization has changed, but being a good person never changes, and it should never change. For me, it’s the way I grew up, and I had a bunch of people who supported me, and now my job is to be the support for others.”

The golfing will continue on Friday, where twice as many are expected to participate. There will be a morning and afternoon group on the course, with awards to follow at the very end of the classic.
