Hinsdale Little League opened its run in the 2024 Little League World Series on Friday with a 5-0 loss to Wailuku, Hawaii, and its left-handed ace pitcher.
Hawaii's Evan Tavares struck out nine batters in 5.1 innings to lead the West region champion. They advance to a 2 p.m. game Monday against the Mountain region champion from Henderson, Nevada.
Illinois, which represents the U.S. Great Lakes region, will play in an elimination game at 8 a.m. Sunday against either the Midwest (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) or Metro (Staten Island, New York) region champions.
The LLWS runs through Aug. 25, when the winners from the U.S. and international brackets face off in the championship game.

Hawaii pitcher Evan Tavares pitched 5.1 shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out nine batters. He also added a run and a walk on offense. He was replaced in the sixth by Kellen Takamura.
Tavares, a lefty, shined in the LLWS opener for Hawaii, striking out the seven batters he faced in a 3-1 win over Salem, New Hampshire . He also struck out 13 of the 16 batters he faced in the West region championship .
Hawaii loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning, two players getting hit by a pitch and a third reaching on a single. The next batter was also hit by a pitch — the third of the inning — and Hawaii extended its lead.

Hawaii has taken advantage of a rough inning for Illinois. Dillon Phelan allowed a hit and three walks, including one with the bases loaded, as Hawaii extended its lead. Phelan was relieved by Grant Wanless with two outs. Pitcher Evan Tavares then helped himself with a hard groundball to the shortstop, whose error scored two runs.

Hawaii left-handed pitcher Evan Tavares is up to seven strikeouts in three innings and has sat down the last nine batters he has faced.
The single-game strikeout record for the LLWS is 22 set in 1971 by Chin-Mu Hsu of the Far East (Taipei, Chinese Taipei). The U.S. record is 21, set twice: first in 1950 by Gordon Andrews of Pensacola, Florida, and in 2002 by Walker Kelly of Fort Worth, Texas.
Illinois led off the game with a walk from Frederick Sackley and a single from Kellan Goodwin — and nothing since. West pitcher Evan Tavares has sat down the next six batters including five by strikeout.
