Oklahoma Veteran's Colony: a home for heroes

A quiet place to call their own

    A colony for veterans only

In 1936, just eight miles South of Wilburton – the one and only Spanish-American War Veterans’ Colony was built.

What's a colony like this all about?

Well, it was like a special neighborhood created just for veterans of the Spanish-American War, a place for them to kick back and take things a little easier after serving their country.

    The rules change for residents

At first, it was set up for those war heroes who were trying to get by on small pensions. But then, guess what? The rules changed, and they decided to open the doors to all the veterans who had been honorably discharged.

Picture this: 760 acres of land, bought for just a dollar per acre, one nonprofit organization arranged for everything to be built. And what's even better--each veteran only had to chip in $10 to be part of the club! That amount has been adjusted, but it's still very affordable. One veteran's wife describes it like this:

My Vietnam Veteran husband and I own a cabin in The Veterans Colony, as it is popularly called, nine miles south of Wilburton, Oklahoma. The Colony is on 800 acres of pine and oak forest. It does not fit for everyone but made for any Veteran who just needs a quiet lot to put a mobile home or cabin on and put in the improvements which consist of water and electric hookups and some sort of septic/waste water system. Improvements on some lots are already in and for sale that include all the hookups and a home in place.

Today, the colony is home to about 200 residents who stayed there permanently. And on weekends, they threw the doors open wide and welcomed an extra 75 families to join the fun.
