JUNCTION CITY ( KSNT ) – On Friday, June 28, a vacant building collapsed in downtown Junction City during a severe storm. This happened in the 600 block of Washington St.

Geary Co. Emergency Management received a call during the height of the storm about a collapse. The City Fire Department responded along with EMS. When they arrived, they saw that the roof had caved in, and debris was all over the road.

Nobody was injured from the collapse.

27 News spoke with the Director of Emergency Management of Geary Co. about what might have caused the collapse.

“I think from what they figured out it probably came in from the top,” said Garry Berges, Director of Emergency Management. “Probably a lot of rain, water standing up on top. We had close to six inches here in Junction City in three hours so, a lot of rain, nowhere for it to go, especially up on flat roofs and so the weight knocked it down.”

Berges also said that the building had recently been purchased by a local resident. He did not know how long it would take to clean everything up, but did say the new owner hired a crew right away. The crew has already begun work on the building.
