    American Legion Post 226, Coweta, OK still going strong.

    The small town of Coweta Oklahoma is located about 25 miles southeast of Tulsa. Coweta is home to the American Legion Post 226 that was founded in 1936. Still going strong after 87 years, this post is a big part of the Coweta community. Post 226 is heavily involved in many local festivals and activities, the members of the post donate time, supplies and money to local veterans, youth, as well as to the Coweta general community.

    Of course, the Post is dedicated to honoring our nations Veterans and Memorial Day is no exception. This year Post 226 expect to put over 700 American flags on graves of veterans who were buried at the Vernon Cemetery. The display of flags is a beautiful honor to our area veteran's. On June 14th Flag Day the post honors our nations flag and with a traditional ceremony and will dispose of any warn and tattered flags in the traditional way.

    Coweta's Veteran’s Memorial at Coweta City Hall is accessible to view year-round. This is a unique site located on the grounds of City Hall and maintained by the American Legion Post 226. You can purchase paver bricks for the Veterans Memorial to dedicate to a Veteran. The service person's name, branch and war that they served will be engraved into the brick, clipart can be added to the brick for additional costs. The engraved pavers are set with other pavers at the Coweta Veterans Memorial to make a grand display that will stands the test of time in honor our service men and women.

    As part of Post 266 community activities the post sponsors an annual Oratorical contest for high school students. Each year the winning student receives $1000.00 and is eligible to compete at the state level and beyond. This year’s winner was Boston Wybrant his speech was on the 25th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Boston is in the 11th Grade and plans to attend Boys State and the West Point Leadership camp this summer. Boys State is a leadership and development organization the American legion supports.

    The Legion also sponsors the Coweta Eagle Scouts by providing a $500 Scholarship to one Eagle Scout every year. The post also hosts an annual history contest that high school organizations can apply to compete for prize money. All contest questions are based on U. S. History and the U.S. Constitution the questions are tied to the Oklahoma State test that is required for high school Graduation.

    To say this post goes above and beyond for Veterans and the community is an understatement. They support and donate to many worthy organizations such as Veterans Organizations, Arts of the Craftsman, PVA (Paralyzed Veterans of America), Heroes on the Water Veterans Association and Toys for Tots. Once a year the Post donates money, food, and clothing to the Veterans Home care facility in Claremore, Oklahoma. On Veterans Day Post 226 serve a delicious all-out lunch for the local Veterans. Twice a year they show up to serve from the food truck at the Patriot Festival, the Fourth of July celebration held at Coweta high school. And the favorite local traditional, Fall Festival American Legion Post 226 will be there, serving up some of the best festival food around.
