After a 3-day manhunt, escaped murderer Ramone Alston was captured early this morning (Aug. 16).

WRAL reports that Alston was captured shortly before 2am at a hotel on Cloverleaf Parkway in Kannapolis. FBI Charlotte SWAT agents, Kannapolis police and Charlotte-Mecklenburg police took part in the arrest.

Shortly afterwards, police arrested Jacobia Crisp – an “acquaintance” of Alston’s – in Alamance County. Crisp was charged with felony aiding and abetting a fugitive.

Alston escaped on Tuesday, August 13, while being transported to UNC Hospitals’ Hillsborough campus for treatment. Hundreds of law enforcement and public safety officials were involved in the search for him. The state also offered a $50,000 reward for any information leading up to Alston’s capture.

Alston was serving a life sentence for first-degree murder at Bertie Correctional Institution. He was convicted for the murder of 1-year-old Maleah Williams , who was shot while playing outside her family’s Chapel Hill apartment on Christmas Day 2015. She died three days later.

Alston has a long criminal record, but no previous attempts to escape.

Following his recapture, Alston will be transported to a high-security unit to resume his sentence. He will also be charged with felony escape from prison. If convicted, additional time will be added to his life sentence.

Statement from North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections Secretary Todd Ishee:

I am grateful to our DAC staff and thankful for the support and effort from hundreds of local, state and federal public safety officers who helped in the search and investigation that returned Alston safely to custody. This was an incredible collaborative effort of many people and agencies.

Investigators are still working to determine if additional accomplices helped him escape and whether he committed any other crimes while on the run.
