AUSTIN, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Texas Department of Public Safety recognized the importance of the department’s Aircraft Operations Division as part of National Aviation Day.

DPS officials state the aircraft division was formed in 1949 and commissioned its first aircraft and pilot to meet the growing demand for specialized investigative teams, equipment and other key personnel.

“From airplanes transporting special investigative teams and helicopters performing rescue missions, to unmanned drones tracking down criminals on the run, aircraft has enhanced our ability to provide unparalleled protection to people across the many miles that make up Texas,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw in a news release.

Officials state the division performs statewide air patrol, criminal surveillance and advanced rescue operations. With the help of technology, AOD can locate and apprehend fugitives, deter criminal activity, and support border security. AOD is also involved in search and rescue missions by local, state and federal first responders during disaster-related events.

As Texas DPS noted, its aircraft division is one the largest airborne law enforcement units in the country, with 12 duty stations, 26 aircraft and more than 100 personnel composed of 50 police pilots and 35 Tactical Flight Officers.

The AOD currently operates a fleet of 15 Airbus A-Stars, one Airbus EC145 C2, one Bell 412, two Pilatus PC-12NGs, four Cessan Caravans, two Cessna 206s and one Beechcraft King Air 350, according to officials. In addition, the department owns over 350 Unmanned Aircraft Systems used in missions like border security, capitol security, traffic accident reconstruction and crime scene investigations.

Officials state that AOD was voted the Excellence in Police Aviation Award by the International Association of Chiefs of Police four times in the last 15 years.
