KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Suspected criminals are caught in the act of breaking into cars in the Piper community. Now, neighbors are taking precautions keep their property safe.

One woman said she caught the break-ins in the Prairie Oaks neighborhood on camera.

She said someone broke into two of her vehicles at about 11 p.m. Monday, but they left empty handed.

The neighbors whose vehicles were broken shared photos from the night it happened. She said a woman with a tattoo on her leg walked up her driveway wearing a mask, while another person waited in a getaway vehicle.

She said the pair broke into two of her vehicles, but she doesn’t keep valuables in the car. So, they didn’t get away with anything.

She said the camera also caught the suspected criminals making a loop through the neighborhood in a dark colored car.

Sarah Updike lives nearby. She knows the importance of taking valuables inside from experience.

“We don’t keep anything in our cars,” Updike said. “My husband has a work vehicle that has been broken into in the past, so we are a lot more vigilant, you have your ring cameras and those kind of things to help you when you’re not necessarily looking with your eye out the window.”

Updike’s family has been here for two and a half years.

Another neighbor told FOX4 he’s lived in his home for more than 30 years.

Both neighbors said it’s generally a safe and quiet neighborhood, where people look out for each other.
