Fescoe calls out Kadarius Toney for No. 1 receiver remark: Playing him in the Super Bowl would be 'a grave mistake'

Kadarius Toney thinks if he gets the ball, he’s a No. 1 receiver. Meanwhile, it’s plausible he’ll be a healthy scratch for the Super Bowl.

The polarizing wideout has missed the last six games, including the AFC Championship, which he was ruled out for because of both a hip injury and the birth of his daughter. The morning of the win over the Ravens, Toney said in a profane tirade on Instagram that he wasn’t hurt.

Toney attempted to clear the air in an interview with NFL Network, saying that he wasn’t trying to take aim at the Chiefs in the rant, but instead fans of the Giants, the team that drafted him in 2021.

But the interview ended in bizarre fashion. He was asked if he’s a No. 1 receiver in the NFL, to which he responded “Yeah, if I get it. If I get the ball, yeah.”

After hearing the audio, Bob Fescoe went off on the Chiefs wideout Tuesday on Fescoe in the Morning.

“You have gotten the ball and given it to the other team numerous times. You also don’t know how to line up onsides. Talk about self awareness. Kadarius Toney, ladies and gentleman," Fescoe said. "They tried to get the ball to you many a time, sir. You flipped it to the Lions, you dropped it, you tipped it to another team, you fumbled it, you lined up offsides. Not sure what we’re missing here, Kadarius.”

Toney’s run with the Chiefs has been an adventure. He was brought in to be a downfield threat with his blistering speed, something he was unable to tap into in New York. He has done that at times with Kansas City, including last year’s Super Bowl win over the Eagles.

But his run has been marred by unforced errors, like his ill-fated offsides that negated a would-be game-winning touchdown against the Bills in the regular season.

The 25-year-old is now off the injury report, and could play Sunday against the 49ers. That is, of course, if Andy Reid decides he is among those who would give the Chiefs the best chance to win – hardly a guarantee at this point.

“I don’t think right now you can risk losing the Super Bowl by putting Kadarius Toney in a game,” Fescoe said. “He’s not one of your best 11, and he doesn’t do a good enough job of giving you an opportunity to win a game. Kadarius Toney is one of those guys that you have to think about costing you a game, not a guy that you think can help win a game. And I don’t want that.

“I don’t want Patrick Mahomes to have Kadarius Toney as one of his 11 guys out there with him on offense, and basically now you have 10 because Patrick doesn’t want to throw to him, or have him line up offsides and erase a big play, or do something stupid to put the ball on the ground. Kadarius Toney is not a trustworthy NFL player right now and I don’t think he should be active in the biggest game of the year. And I think if the Chiefs activate him and put him out there in the Super Bowl, they’re making a grave mistake.

“(Now) watch on Sunday, he’ll make the biggest play of the game.”
