It would be easy for Kansas City Chiefs coaches and players to get desensitized to Patrick Mahomes' remarkable ability since they see it every day. Apparently, Andy Reid goes out of his way on occasion to keep the quarterback’s skill in perspective.

Mahomes is on perhaps the greatest run to begin a career we’ve ever seen. He’s been to six straight AFC Championships since taking over as the Chiefs starting quarterback and has reached four Super Bowls. He won his second straight title and third overall with Sunday’s win over the San Francisco 49ers, and is cementing himself as one of the greatest players of all time.

His offensive coordinator, Matt Nagy, told Fescoe in the Morning on Wednesday that he believes Mahomes has already earned that status.

“I’m obviously going to be biased because I’ve been with this kid a long time and I’ve seen his growth, I’ve seen his competitiveness, that’s me," Nagy said. "I’d be crazy to not feel that way, to not think that way. I’m so impressed with the player, I’m so impressed with the person.”

Seeing Mahomes so often has obviously made coaches and players alike get used to the quarterback’s otherworldly talent.

But Nagy said that sometimes during film sessions, Reid will watch plays again to emphasize that what they’re seeing from Mahomes isn’t exactly commonplace.

“What we’re going through right now," Nagy said, "Coach Reid, every now and then when we’re watching tape after practice -- it could just be a Wednesday, 5 o’clock watching tape after practice, and Pat does one of his 20 throws that he does in a practice where we just take it for granted.

“Every now and then Coach will stop the tape, he’ll pause it and will say ‘You know guys, this throw right here that he just made, let’s make sure we don’t take it for granted.’ It happened in Super Bowl week out in Vegas (too) … It’s very natural and easy for coaches to go to the remote and go to the next play because we see it all the time.

“But he paused it and started going into reverse, there was a little silence in the room and he went back and said ‘Guys, don’t ever take this for granted.’ When you see that, it reminds you of who we have back there at quarterback. We’re in such an amazing moment in time in Kansas City with what we’re seeing, and there’s so much more ahead of us, which is great.”

Time will tell if Mahomes is able to catch Tom Brady’s seven Super Bowl wins, a metric that some circles believe trumps all in debates about who is the greatest ever.

Regardless, Mahomes has shown early on that if anyone is going to threaten that record, it’ll be him.
