Mahomes Restructures Contract, Frees up Cap Room For Three-Peat Charge

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers to win back-to-back Super Bowls, which sets up the franchise with a shot at history - winning three in a row.

Never done before in the NFL, the Chiefs won't have history on their side, but the organization can make moves to give itself the best possible chance at doing it.

One such move is restructuring several contracts to free up cap space so the franchise has the financial means to sign quality players.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has seen the flip of the switch on his long-term contract, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, which creates almost $22 million in cap space.

With Chris Jones set to be a free agent, the franchise moved swiftly, signing him to a five-year extension. The other domino is cornerback L'Jarius Sneed, who is attracting interest from the Tennessee Titans.

As Mahomes' contract has now freed up nearly $22 million in cap space, perhaps Sneed could be re-signed as the Chiefs look to create history and win three Super Bowls in a row.

While it is nearly impossible to do, the Chiefs appear to be doing all they can in order to get the right pieces on both sides of the ball to have one last serious tilt at winning another ring.

What Mahomes' restructure could also do is free up cap room for the Chiefs to sign another offensive weapon. Kansas City's receiving room in 2023 was deemed to be Mahomes' "worst" since entering the league, yet he still managed to win a championship.

Don't expect the skill position players to be as "bad" as they were last season. With Mahomes' restructure, they have the financial means to go shopping.
