KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Animal shelters across the Kansas City metro are overflowing with pets that need forever homes.
Specifically, organizations like the KC Pet Project are facing rapid influxes of strays, causing the kennels to reach almost double capacity so far this year. And now, with the upcoming holiday week, fears of more overcrowding are even more prevalent.
July 5 is the largest pet intake day of the year for the KC Pet Project and the third-highest intake day nationally . Due to the stress and anxiety Fourth of July fireworks cause animals, many tend to run away from their homes, leaving them to be taken in by local shelters.
As a result, the KC Pet Project has held several events, including the Fostering Fair over the June 28-30 weekend where dogs can find their temporary, short-term, long-term and/or permanent homes.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (set up in 2-hour increments) every day of the fair, KC Pet Project has hosted in-person information sessions so people can get all the necessary details they need to take in one of the organization’s pups.
However, if you are interested in fostering but are worried about the costs, don’t worry because the KC Pet Project provides free food, crates, toys, leashes, collars, behavioral support and medical care for the pet throughout the fostering process.
No appointment is necessary for the fair, just choose a session time that works for you and come by to learn.
In addition to the fostering event, the shelter also started its Fourth of July adoption special, where all dogs and cats over 6 months old are free, and puppies and kittens are only $50. The special ends on July 7.
