Kansas City Chiefs’ Pass Rusher Provides Major Injury Update

Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Charles Omenihu tore his ACL in the team’s AFC Championship Game win over the Baltimore Ravens last winter, preventing him from taking part in the Super Bowl.

Obviously, it was a rough moment for Omenihu, who was in his debut campaign with the Chiefs last season.

The good news is that the 26-year-old is on the mend and could be back on the field at some point in 2024 as Kansas City makes its quest for a three-peat.

“It’s going good,” Omenihu said of his recovery, via Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 . “Slow process, everybody told me it was going to be like that, but it’s been decent.”

Omenihu played in 11 games this past year and was very productive during his time on the field, registering 28 tackles, seven sacks and a couple of forced fumbles.

As a matter of fact, he was the Chiefs’ third-leading sack-getter, so the club definitely needs him back. Of course, the key is not to rush things.

“Honestly, right now, I’m steady, I’m cool,” Omenihu said. “I got to be like this. I kind of keep myself like that, just stay plain, and we’ll get to the point where I ramp it up like that.”

We’ll see if Omenihu ends up contributing in some way next season.

The Chiefs will need to replace Charles Omenihu’s production

The Chiefs aren’t exactly bereft of talent along their front seven, but they will absolutely need to replace Omenihu’s production some way.

Perhaps that means getting more out of George Karlaftis and Chris Jones, who both racked up 10.5 sacks apiece in 2023.

Or, perhaps Michael Danna will continue to take steps forward. The 26-year-old defensive lineman has steadily increased his sack total since entering the NFL in 2020, most recently finishing with six sacks last season.

Kansas City finished second in the league with 57 sacks this past year, so it is not exactly starving for production in that area. Still, there is no doubt that Omenihu was a force for the club in 2023, and the Chiefs will need to ensure that he is not horribly missed come September.

Hopefully, Omenihu is able to return to the gridiron quick enough where Kansas City won’t even have to worry about his absence for an extended period of time.
