Dry and cooler weather will kick off the weekend in Kansas City, but excessive rainfall will be possible as storms return overnight Saturday, the National Weather Service said.

Pleasant weather is expected as temperatures on Friday and Saturday will be slightly below average in the low to upper 80s. Typically, Kansas City sees temperatures around 88 degrees this time of year. The weather service said dew point temperatures will fall into the middle 60s, making conditions more comfortable.

The weather service said that, aside from an isolated shower in northern Missouri on Friday afternoon, the weather will be dry for most of Friday and Saturday.

Flooding concerns remain

Due to heavy rainfall earlier this week, river flooding continues along the Missouri River and several streams and creeks in west-central and central Missouri.

Flood warnings continue for cities along the Missouri River , including St. Joseph, Atchison, Leavenworth, Parkville, Napoleon, Glasgow, Miami, Waverly and Booneville.

As of Thursday evening, the river was 23.3 feet at St. Joseph, where moderate flooding was occurring. The river was expected to crest at 23.6 feet, then fall below flood stage, 17 feet, by early Monday.

At Leavenworth, the river was 22 feet, where minor flooding was occurring. The river was expected to crest at 22.6 feet Saturday morning and fall below the flood stage of 20 feet Sunday afternoon.

In Parkville, the river was 27 feet, where minor flooding was occurring. The river was expected to crest at 27.9 feet early Saturday morning and then fall below flood stage, 25 feet, Sunday evening.

Excessive rainfall in KC weekend forecast

Kansas City’s next chance for showers and thunderstorms comes Saturday night through Monday, the weather service said. While the threat of severe weather is low, locally heavy rainfall is possible, especially on Sunday.

Runoff from the storms could lead to additional flooding, so people are urged to use caution when driving around flooded areas and avoid driving into flooded roads.

Cloud cover will keep temperatures in the low 80s on Sunday and Monday.

“Temperatures trend back to near normal levels from Tuesday through the end of the week, with highs in the middle to upper 80s and lows in the mid to upper 60s expected,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion.
