Former NFL Star Has Bad News For Chiefs’ Rivals In 2024

    By Robert Marvi,

Will the Kansas City Chiefs become the first team to ever win three straight Super Bowl championships? That is perhaps the biggest question being asked across the NFL as the start of training camp creeps closer.

The Chiefs have managed to win back-to-back Vince Lombardi Trophies the last two years despite trading All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill in the 2022 offseason. At the time, it was thought they would take a step back, but instead, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid have proven they belong in the stratosphere of greatness by making something out of an unproven ensemble of wide receivers.

The rest of the AFC has gotten even stronger, and several teams in the NFC look poised to take a step forward. That, along with the inherent challenges of successfully defending a world championship, has led some to predict Kansas City will fall short this coming season.

But LeSean Mccoy said on Fox Sports 1’s “Speak” that because of how well the Chiefs have defied their doubters the last two years, they do not have any real threats anywhere in the NFL.

Which teams pose the biggest threat to the Chiefs?

It has been thought that perhaps the Baltimore Ravens could mount a serious challenge to Mahomes and crew. They finished with a 13-4 record, the best mark in the league, last season, but in the AFC Championship Game against Kansas City, their offense went flat in a loss to the Chiefs.

In the last five years, the only AFC team to defeat the Chiefs in the playoffs has been the Cincinnati Bengals, who did it during the 2021 season. Star quarterback Joe Burrow was stricken by multiple injuries last season, and if healthy, the Bengals should be able to give the Chiefs a run for their money.

In the NFC, the San Francisco 49ers, the team Kansas City defeated in last year’s Super Bowl, are the obvious pick as the club most likely to end the Chiefs’ championship reign.

But Mahomes has proven he is a magician and cultivated, if not an aura of invincibility, an aura of inevitability. It’s akin to the one Tom Brady had for many years, as well as the ones NBA legends Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant enjoyed.

Wide receiver Rashee Rice, who had a strong rookie campaign in 2023, could be a star in the making, if only he overcomes the many legal charges he’s facing stemming from a car crash he was involved in a few months ago. First-round draft pick Xavier Worthy set an NFL combine record for the fastest 40-yard dash time, and it is hoped he could follow in the footsteps of Hill.

The Chiefs managed to win it all last season despite a somewhat modest 11-6 regular season record. If things go well enough for them, perhaps McCoy’s assessment that no team can threaten them will prove to be true.
