Patrick Mahomes Issues Serious Challenge For 1 Chiefs Rookie

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes does not want a repeat of last season's wide receiver fiasco.

The Chiefs had one of the shakiest wideout rooms in the NFL during the 2023 regular season. The team led the league in total dropped passes. One Chiefs receiver even turned into NFL Twitter's favorite punching bag .

Despite the lack of a steady presence at wide receiver, Kansas City was still able to lift up the Lombardi trophy. But that doesn't mean Mahomes wants to go through the same issues again.

The Chiefs picked up rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy in April to help remedy their pass-catching woes. K.C. swung a trade with the Buffalo Bills to select Worthy with the 28th overall pick.

While speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Mahomes was asked about Worthy. The 2-time NFL MVP stated that there are no plans to simply "ease him in."

"[Worthy] is going to have to be ready to go," said Mahomes, via ESPN's Adam Teicher. "We got a lot of competition on this offense. ... He got a lot of mental work in these last few weeks that he had during OTAs and minicamp, but it's time to go now. Y'all saw it with Rashee [Rice] last year and some of the throwing-up days he had. We're going to push you to the limit and prepare yourself to be ready to go for the season."

Worthy turned heads during his NFL combine appearance with a record-breaking 40-yard dash. The 21-year-old ran a blistering 4.21.

The Chiefs rookie has yet to even take a single NFL snap. But Mahomes already appears to expect great things from his new target.
