Chiefs’ Top Rookie Reveals Silver Lining Of Major Injury

The Kansas City Chiefs selected whom many feel is a steal with the 32nd overall pick of the NFL Draft, nabbing speedy University of Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy.

Some viewed Worthy as the Chiefs’ predecessor to Tyreek Hill and were looking forward to watching him go to work this summer, but a hamstring injury Worthy suffered earlier this spring put a pin in that.

The good news is that the Longhorns standout is on the mend and is actually putting a positive spin on the injury that is still not fully healed.

“[During] my time off and even when I was off during OTAs, I took the time to really learn and [get] in tune [with] the playbook,” Worthy said, via the Chiefs’ official YouTube account . “Asked the questions I needed to ask, stayed by the offensive coordinator, coach [Matt] Nagy, and I feel like that really helped me.”

Worthy added that his hamstring is “getting better.”

The 21-year-old is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he hauled in 75 receptions for 1,014 yards and five touchdowns. He arrived at Texas in 2021 and immediately made an impact from the jump, catching 62 passes for 981 yards and 12 scores. He then snared 60 balls for 760 yards while reaching the end zone nine times during his sophomore season.

Worthy set a record by running the fastest 40-yard dash in the history of the NFL Scouting Combine, clocking in at a blistering 4.21 seconds.

The Chiefs’ receiving corps is still a question mark in 2024

Kansas City’s receiving corps was the club’s biggest issue last season, as Rashee Rice represented the only reliable wide out on the roster.

The Chiefs did attempt to address the problem over the last several months, signing Marquise Brown and also drafting Worthy, but Rice’s run-in with the law in late March has put a damper on things.

Rice is facing a potential lengthy suspension from the NFL due to his role in a hit-and-run car crash this past spring and may even be facing prison time.

As a result, Kansas City’s depth chart at the wide receiver position remains up in the air.

If Rice is able to avoid jail, he may end up getting suspended for half the season, which would put the Chiefs in quite a predicament.

Of course, Brown does have a 1,000-yard campaign under his belt, and Worthy could end up being a stud right off the bat.

But there is no question that Kansas City will miss Rice if he ends up being absent for an extended period of time.
