Kansas City Chiefs OL Hunter Nourzad is bringing a bit of University Park, Pennslyvania with him to the NFL.
As Nourzad gets his first training camp underway in St. Joseph, Missouri, he's not being tied down to any one position. He's working all along the offensive line as a jack-of-all-trades , filling in wherever it is that Chiefs OL coach Andy Heck might need him.
"I'm working everywhere," Nourzad said. "I don't have — I'm not a specific position person. I'm going to do anything they want me to. If they want me to go get water, I'll do that."
While Nourzad won't be fetching water any time soon, the point stands. He's willing to do anything it takes to help his new team be successful. Nourzad's O-Line coach at Penn State, Phil Trautwein, recognized some familiar subtext behind those words.
For members of Chiefs Kingdom, Penn State head coach James Franklin instills four core values in all of his players. Those values are. . .
- 1. Positive Attitude
- 2. Work Ethic
- 3. Compete
- 4. Sacrifice
Each of these tenets helps create a winning culture at Penn State and they're all highly achievable for the players. Staying positive through adversity builds character and helps you stay grounded. Having a strong work ethic ensures that no one ever outworks you. Competition makes you and everyone around you better. To achieve goals individually or as a team, there will always be a level of sacrifice.
Nourzad's leaning on some of those same core values as he acclimates to life in the NFL. He's also recognizing that the culture the Chiefs have in place in the offensive line room isn't too dissimilar to the one he comes from at Penn State.
"The entire offensive line room that’s here is very, very cohesive and we all have great relationships with each other," Nourzad said. "It’s not really one person leaning on another, it’s everybody leaning on each other, and I think it’s the room and the culture that has been built here – in the offensive line room – is extremely good."
The OL room is a competitive and hard-working bunch who are looking to help everyone get better and achieve the end goal. As far as sacrifice at the NFL level is concerned, Nourzad's personal goal for training camp is one that he sees as a common thread amongst his fellow rookies.
"I just want to show that I can hang with these guys and I can compete at a high level," Nourzad said. "And I'm gonna do everything I can in my power to do that.
