Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones is one of the best defenders in football. We know this. However, Pro Football Focus has ranked him the sixth-best player in the NFL, period .
Jones was the third-ranked defensive player on the list, coming in behind Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett and Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons.
“Nobody has been able to perform closer to Aaron Donald over the past few years than Jones has,” Sam Monson wrote.
Jones is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he played 16 games and rattled off 30 tackles, 10.5 sacks and four passes defended en route to his fifth straight Pro Bowl appearance and second consecutive First-Team All-Pro selection.
The 30-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Mississippi State, was selected by the Chiefs in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
He broke out in his third season, racking up 40 tackles, 15.5 sacks, an interception, a couple of forced fumbles, five passes and a defensive touchdown.
Amazingly enough, Jones did not make the Pro Bowl that year, but made his first trip in 2019 after posting 36 stops and nine sacks.
He equaled his career-high of 15.5 sacks in 2022.
Can the Chiefs win their third straight Super Bowl?
The Chiefs are looking to win their third straight Super Bowl, but the odds are certainly stacked against them.
No team in NFL history has ever won three consecutive Super Bowls, although the Green Bay Packers did win three straight NFL championships in the 1960s.
The Packers are the only club to ever three-peat.
Kansas City will have to deal with a rugged AFC that features challengers like the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans and New York Jets, and the NFC representative surely will no be a pushover, either.
The Chiefs still have the best quarterback in football in Patrick Mahomes and added some significant pieces on offense this offseason, so they should certainly win their ninth straight AFC West title.
Whether Chris Jones and Co. can make it through another grueling playoff run remains to be seen.
