KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Westport home, the Bent-Ward House, that has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978 is officially on the market. The Sunset Hill home, built in the 1850s is currently listed for $1.49 million.

While the building is unique on its own, the history of the property is just as special. Mormon missionaries originally purchased the land that the home sits on in the 1830s so that they could be close to Independence.

Additionally, the Bent-Ward House was used in the Civil War’s Battle of Westport where Union troops chased away Confederate troops stationed in the house on October 23, 1864.

The home was also inhabited by Ward Parkway’s namesake, Seth Ward. Ward was a businessman, trader and trapper whose real-estate empire played a major role in the development of the Country Club Plaza and the Kansas City Metro as a whole.

The lavish home boasts reminders of the era in which it was built with a fur room, an underground tunnel, small closets and a lack of hallways.
