ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Days before Chiefs training camp heats all the way up, the team president addressed the media as the future location of Chiefs home games hangs in the balance.

“This is a generational decision,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said.

“This is going to impact the future of this franchise for generations. We have got to get it right.”

Missouri Western confident Chiefs training camp will continue there

Kansas and Missouri leaders are both making a push for that future to be on their turf. While uncertainty looms, we know one thing, the Chiefs will be in Arrowhead up until 2031.

Those questions extend past just the stadium, but with a training camp contract expiring soon as well, where the team will start their quest for a title each year is in limbo as well.

However, it’s the stadium that remains top of mind, and on this day when rookies took the field once again, that action took back seat to Donovan.

“We’re looking at it as a measured response,” he said.

“What makes the most sense for our fans, what makes the most sense for our franchise and this organization and what makes the most sense that can have the biggest impact on this region.”

Donovan is praising the efforts of Kansas lawmakers in their quick action in passing star bond legislation , opening the door to a Chief’s stadium in the Sunflower state.

He says that the team is in discussion with both Kansas and Missouri stakeholders. While no decision has been made just yet, six months from now they’ll have a better idea of what the next stage is. What is clear is that the Chiefs are moving forward separately from the Royals.

“We are jointly in agreement that it makes sense to go separate,” Donovan said.

As far as what lies ahead for training camp with the contract with Missouri Western State University expiring after next year, Donovan says the city of St. Joseph and the MWSU campus have become a part of Chiefs culture. Seemingly saying the team will be here for the foreseeable future.

“Why wouldn’t we, it’s been a great partnership,” said Donovan.

“We’ve been here the last 14 out of 15 years and we expect that to continue.”

Sunday will be the first day fans will be allowed at training camp. President Donovan says they expect the crowd to be record-breaking, already seeing a 30% increase in ticket reservations.
