KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The summer of soccer in Kansas City reached another chapter as the Kansas City Current opened NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup group play in front of a sold-out CPKC Stadium on Saturday.

Kristen Hamilton’s goal in the 83rd minute helped the Current’s 3-1 win over the Houston Dash. It was Hamilton’s second goal of the season and her first goal since the March 16 season opener.

Michelle Cooper started the scoring for the Current with a goal 59 seconds into the match off of a cross from Temwa Chawinga. Cooper owns the club record for the first and second fastest goals in a match.

It was also Cooper’s second goal of the season.

In the 20th minute, Houston Dash’s Yuki Nagasota dispossessed Cooper and shot a supreme goal from distance for the equalizer.

Lo LaBonta scored in the 68th minute off of a free kick just outside the box that bounced off of goalkeeper Erin McKinney’s attempted block and softly bounced into the net.

The Current had 19 shots (eight on goal), led by Cooper’s eight, while Houston had nine shots (two on goal).

The Current will host Mexican side Pachuca on Saturday in their second Summer Cup match at 7 p.m. KC also hosts Tigres UANL on Thursday, Aug. 1 at 7 p.m.
