The Kansas City Royals continue to get strong performances from their starting rotation. On Saturday, Royals starter Brady Singer added another signature moment to his ledger.

You can thank social media for that. Really.

Singer tossed seven scoreless innings in a 6-1 victory over the White Sox . He allowed five hits and registered seven strikeouts in earning his sixth win.

“We always talk about it with him, it’s the way he locates,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “He seemed to have it on both sides of the plate. He also had some good, bigger breaking balls, and I think that kept them off balance.”

Singer primarily stuck with his sinker and slider. Both pitches were effective in limiting the White Sox.

However, it was his sweeper that drew the attention postgame. Singer said he tinkered with his pitching grip. The story of how ...

“I saw the pitch grip on Twitter last night and actually decided to use it today,” Singer said. “I just kind of pulled it out today and it worked well in the bullpen. So I decided to throw it, definitely.”

This offseason, Singer worked to refine his sweeper . He added to his arsenal alongside a four-seam fastball. The pitches created a diverse assortment that has aided him throughout the 2024 campaign.

Singer collected 42 swings and 11 whiffs against the White Sox, per Baseball Savant. He didn’t divulge which social media account he found the pitching grip on, but it did help him avoid potential jams.

He escaped slight trouble in the fourth inning by getting White Sox rookie Brooks Baldwin to strike out. Later, he worked around two singles in the seventh.

“The sinker was great, and I thought it had good movement,” Singer said. “The slider was good, but the sweeper I thought was better and probably the best pitch of the night.”

The Royals supplied him with enough run support. In his last five starts, the Royals have scored 39 runs while Singer was in the game.

Singer has allowed one earned run or fewer in 13 of 20 starts this season. Now armed with a new sweeper grip, he could look to lower those numbers even further.

“He’s an ultimate competitor and he has been in big spots before,” Quatraro said. “He thrives on that kind of stuff.”
