As the first day of Kansas City Chiefs training camp gets underway at Missouri Western State University, a veteran has joined several teammates on injury lists .

As the rookie, QB, and injured players headstart got underway, DE BJ Thompson was placed on the Non-Football Injury list. CB Jaylen Watson, DE Charles Omenihu, DT Derrick Nnadi, and LG Joe Thuney were all placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Now, Chiefs veteran S Justin Reid has been added to the Active/Non-Football Injury list with a quad injury. It's unclear when he suffered the injury, but the NFI designation suggests this happened while he was training on his own away from the team. He was placed on the list on Saturday when veteran players officially reported to training camp in St. Joe.

Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire also landed on the Non-Football Illness (NFI) list with DE BJ Thompson when veterans arrived on Saturday. However, his stay on that list was short-lived. Edwards-Helaire was activated from the list on Sunday morning and practiced with the team.

The Chiefs' head coach confirmed that the veteran safety had been placed on the NFI list at the onset of camp. He didn't have a timeline to provide for No. 20's return to practice, but he was confident that Justin would do everything the right way.

"Yeah, listen, we're just day-by-daying it right now and we'll see how he does," Reid told reporters on Sunday. "He's very honest with you, and he's not gonna hide the things. (Justin Reid) makes sure he tells you how he's feeling. And so we trust him with that. Rick (Burkholder), will take care of the rest of that.

Reid's absence has paved the way for rookie S Jaden Hicks to get some run with the first-team defense during nickel looks. When two safeties were on the field it was Bryan Cook and Chamarri Conner. However, in nickel, Conner shifted into the slot with Cook and Hicks as the two safeties on the field.

Keep in mind that players on "active" injury lists still count against the 90-man offseason roster. This means that Reid brings the total to six players taking up roster spots, but not yet participating fully in offseason work at training camp.
