Chiefs trying something new with Kadarius Toney in surprising camp twist

The Chiefs are doing what they can to make the Kadarius Toney experiment work.
The former Giants first-round pick was spotted lining up as a running back during the early days of Kansas City’s 2024 training camp.
While training with Patrick Mahomes from Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Mo., Toney worked on receiving a toss and turning up the field.
Toney’s roster spot could be in jeopardy as he enters the final year of his contract.
The Chiefs signed Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and drafter Xavier Worthy, two speedy receivers who possess similar skills to Toney.
The 25-year-old posted several highlight-worthy drops — including in Week 1, leading to a pick-six in a loss to the Lions — and dropped 12.9 percent of his passes, the 11th-highest among receivers with 30-plus targets last year.
The Chiefs haven’t been afraid to use Toney’s elite 4.39 speed via the running game before.
In his 20-game tenure with the Chiefs, Toney has 16 carries for 90 yards, good for 5.6 yards per carry.
Last season, Toney took 18 of his 236 snaps in the backfield, plus two at quarterback.
Despite Toney’s setbacks, the Chiefs won their second straight Super Bowl.
He missed the Chiefs’ playoff run last season while dealing with a hip injury.
Kansas City traded a compensatory third-round pick and a sixth-rounder — which ultimately was used for the Giants trade for tight end Darren Waller and corner Tre Hawkins III — for Toney in October 2022.
The 20th overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, Toney’s Giants tenure lasted only 12 games, spanning 41 catches for 420 yards and zero scores.
Toney and the champs will begin their preseason on Aug. 10 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
