The Kansas City Chiefs have every reason to come into the season with a case of hubris. Patrick Mahomes and most of the roster have won two consecutive Super Bowls, putting themselves on a shockingly exclusive list. However, their past success could spell their future doom.

At least, that is what one former Packers star believes.

Speaking on Tuesday’s edition of “The Carton Show,” analyst Greg Jennings cautioned the team against letting early success get into their heads. With two Super Bowls done, any “early success” could make it seem that their third Super Bowl win is just a matter of time, allowing them to coast.

Specifically, Jennings claimed that Marquise Brown and Xavier Worthy’s additions showing early quality returns could be the catalyst that ultimately sinks the ship. He argued that the Chiefs would be better off starting slow like they did last season to refocus them.

AFC newcomers line up to take on Chiefs team emerges as Patriots-esque league villain

Until they won it all in 2023, the Chiefs largely had been seen as the young, fun new era coming as a breath of fresh air from Tom Brady’s reign. Following that win (coupled with the addition of the Taylor Swift effect), seemingly more fans are looking for who a new AFC challenger.

The Chiefs are also taking on a villainous role.

Rashee Rice faces multiple felony accusations and as Carton put it, is likely facing suspension. Harrison Butker, meanwhile, has become a center of controversy after making some statements interpreted to be sexist at a college commencement speech. Punter Matt Araiza’s addition has also stirred up controversy, as he had been accused of taking part in a gang rape in college that was thrown out of court.

For decades, Brady and his teammates faced similar controversies and blowback over the years. Other fanbases hoped for a new, greater challenger. However, aside from perhaps Eli and Peyton Manning, no one could match any talking points with Brady fans.

This year, some hope that CJ Stroud can overtake Mahomes. Meanwhile, others hope a conference newcomer like Anthony Richardson or Aaron Rodgers can stop Mahomes dead in his tracks.

However, considering the Chiefs’ dominance over the league in the last half-decade, it may take a slip-up from Mahomes’ team in addition to a new surging rival to usher in a fresh era.

Does the NFL already have that challenger, or will fans continue to wait into 2025?
