Chiefs defense tells us without actually telling us that they're ready for the pads to come on at training camp

Things got a little chippy during Day 4 of Kansas City Chiefs training camp practice in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Alongside the big plays and a few injuries that occurred during practice, there were a few moments you wouldn't expect to see during the padless, non-contact practice. Those moments probably would have been better suited for a padded practice. Incidental contact will happen at times during padless practices, but players are generally told to avoid it as much as they can.

Several defensive players clearly showcased that they were ready for the pads to come on through their actions. Starting with this interception from CB Trent McDuffie in 11-on-11, just watch LB Nick Bolton toss WR Justyn Ross like a ragdoll on the play.

That play didn't lead to any sort of extracurriculars, but it likely bled over into the next incident.

Things got a little chippy when third-year DE George Karlaftis collided with WR Kadarius Toney after he made a catch. It wasn't a full-on tackle, but Karlaftis puts Toney on his back. Toney threw the football at Karlaftis as he walked away. Veteran TE Travis Kelce even ran in there to give Karlaftis a shove and a piece of his mind.

Andy Reid reportedly pulled Toney off to the side and had some words with him after this moment. The throwing of the football was likely seen as instigation and Reid doesn't play around when it comes to any sort of distractions like fighting during practice.

Ultimately, it just feels like the defense is eager for the pads to come on during practice on Friday. They've been having padless practices since late May with no opportunity to do their jobs to the fullest extent. Once the pads come on and a little bit of contact is allowed, it'll feel more like and more like a fair fight for the defensive side of the ball.
