Jerry Jones' Unexpected Reference To Patrick Mahomes Draws Attention

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made an unusual reference to Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes on Thursday, drawing significant attention from fans and media alike.

Jones made this comparison while addressing the media after the Cowboys’ training camp session.

He used it to explain his cautious approach toward extending key players, including star pass rusher Micah Parsons, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and veteran quarterback Dak Prescott, all of whom are searching for new contracts.

The Cowboys have faced scrutiny for not extending these players earlier in the year, particularly as the market for their positions has surged.

Despite the criticism, Jones seems unfazed by the situation. He likened the team’s current strategy to being an option quarterback, much like Mahomes, suggesting that they are still evaluating their options.

"We're buying time," Jones said. "We're an option quarterback and we haven't handed it off or pitched it. We're trying to make our mind up what to do. Does that sound like (Patrick) Mahomes to you?"

While Jones' comparison is creative, many argue that Mahomes is more known for his exceptional passing rather than being an option quarterback.

The effectiveness of Jones' approach remains to be seen. With CeeDee Lamb already holding out of training camp and rumors that both he and Parsons are seeking to be the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league the situation is becoming increasingly complex.

As the Dak Prescott era approaches its end, the Cowboys will need to figure out these challenges carefully and quickly.
