Former first-round pick impresses and four more key observations from Day 5 of Chiefs training camp

The Kansas City Chiefs held their first padded practice of training camp on Friday.

The defense has been chomping at the bit to be able to make some contact , while the offense looked to keep its momentum rolling from the previous few days. The Chiefs are still ramping up to full-length two-hour practices, with today's running for about an hour and a half.

I was among those in attendance for Kansas City's first training camp practice on Friday. Here are my top observations on the day:

Second year DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah had an impressive day

Expectations have risen for Anudike-Uzomah this season as he looks to get more playing time and make an impact for the defense. Although he's still a backup, he could be worked into the rotation more this year, especially if he can perform like he did during practice today.

Our friends over at KC Sports Network captured two impressive reps from Anudike-Uzomah against left tackle Wanya Morris during individual drills.

Anudike-Uzomah also had several impressive snaps during 11-on-11 scrimmages. Hopefully he can carry this momentum throughout camp and preseason and become a key piece of the Chiefs' defensive line.

It was a rough day for the offense

The K.C. defense set the tone for the day by getting pressure on quarterback Patrick Mahomes during team scrimmages, like this one from defensive tackle Chris Jones.

Mahomes and his receivers couldn't consistently get on the same page and were out of rhythm for most of the day. Remember, the Chiefs' defense is one of the best units in the league and have been eager to start doing some hitting. It's safe to say that the offense will bounce back and continue to improve.

WR Kadarius Toney and RB Deneric Prince got plenty of work in

The Chiefs are giving both Toney and Prince a long, hard look as they vie for roster spots. Toney is looking to bounce back after a rough 2023 season and the coaching staff is coming up with different ways to best utilize him . He ran with the first and second-team offense during practice and received a lot of targets.

Like he did during last year's camp, Prince is getting plenty of reps with the starters and the backups. He took a lot of handoffs as the Chiefs did some running game install, and he also caught a few passes - including a touchdown. Prince went cold as training camp went on last year, so we'll see if he progresses this time around in year two.

Rookie Kingsley Suamataia was the starting left tackle throughout the day

After splitting starting reps pretty evenly with Wanya Morris throughout the first few days of camp, it's noteworthy that Suamataia got the nod with the starting offensive line unit during the first padded practice.

He played well overall but got beat a couple of times by Anudike-Uzomah and Mike Danna. If he practices with the starters again tomorrow, that will be very telling as to what the Chiefs think of his chances to win the job.
