Chiefs Reveal Logic Behind Controversial Matt Araiza Roster Decision

With Tommy Townsend's departure, the Kansas City Chiefs needed a new punter. Townsend was one of the most reliable punters in the game, so replacing him would be hard.

Because of that, the Chiefs signed former San Diego State punter Matt Araiza. If that name sounds familiar, it's likely because of two things. One was that he was nicknamed the "Punt God" in college due to his leg.

The other reason, though, is that Araiza was accused of gang rape before his rookie season started. That accusation led the Buffalo Bills to release him. Eventually, though, charges were dropped with an agreement between both parties.

The Chiefs have decided to make Araiza their full-time punter for next season. When asked about the decision, ST coordinator Dave Toub had this to say :

"It was a tough decision,” said Toub. "It wasn’t really cut and dry, but in the end, Matt (Araiza) was a little more consistent day to day. Being a lefty punter, a little bit older, I think we made that choice to go with it. I didn’t want to go into this camp with two guys.”

Bringing Araiza in was a pretty controversial decision. The evidence does suggest that the Chiefs punter is most likely innocent. However, that will not easily sway the fans that follow casually.
