Fans Concerned For Patrick Mahomes After Chiefs' Latest Development

The Kansas City Chiefs overhauled the most disappointing position group in football over the offseason by signing Hollywood Brown and drafting Xavier Worthy at wide receiver.

Travis Kelce begins training camp fresher than he was throughout 2023, and running back Isiah Pacheco also boasts a clean bill of health. The Chiefs are bringing back four starting offensive linemen, too.

What's the two-time reigning champions' biggest question mark on offense in 2024, then: Who will protect the blindside of franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes?

Coach Andy Reid and company have not made a firm decision on their starting left tackle. After the first two days of padded practice in training camp, though, rookie Kingsley Suamataia seems to have a leg up on second-year vet Wanya Morris.

Suamataia, the No. 63 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has been taking all of the first-team reps at left tackle since Kansas City put the pads on Friday, according to Pete Sweeney of Arrowhead Pride. Morris, meanwhile, has been relegated to second-string snaps.

Though the Chiefs would no doubt prefer their second-round pick earn the starting job, not everyone is enthusiastic about Suamataia emerging as Mahomes' primary protector.

Kansas City selected Suamataia out of BYU fully aware he would need ample professional seasoning. While fans may be wary of letting the 21-year-old work through growing pains this season, the Chiefs are clearly pleased with Suamataia's early progress.

"You’ve got to be able to back-to-back-to-back these things, and he’s working his tail off doing that, and then the mental part," Reid said of Suamataia, per Arrowhead Pride. "We’re throwing a ton at him, but I like the way he’s going about it. I like the way he’s fighting in there. He’s going to be OK as we roll here.”
